Introduction to EnergyBus

Summary

EnergyBus is an open, CANbus-based standard for all electric components of LEVs (Light Electric Vehicles) based on DC. It is used in order to improve safety and compatibility of light electric vehicles. It consists of cutting-edge connectors and respective communication protocol. The data transmission in Energybus depend on the CAN bus and especially on CAN open. The EnergyBus specifications are released through the EnergyBus Association, situated in Germany. Members of EnergyBus consist of individuals or manufacturers of vehicles, systems, components and retailers as well. These members come from different industries and geographies.  They currently include Panasonic, Bosch, Sanyo, VARTA, Phillips and Deutsche Bahn. The aim of the EnergyBus standard is compatibility of charging equipment with a range of battery types, LEVs and chemistry for E-Bikes.

Benefits

A key benefit of EnergyBus is that the same charger can be used for a variety of batteries from different manufacturers, chemistries and producers. This also allows the user to keep the same power adaptors while upgrading batteries. Other benefits of EnergyBus include:

1. Since the concept is very innovative, new compatible components will make the product development process more cost and time effective and also contribute to larger choice of high quality vehicles.

2. The use of EnergyBus can solve technical challenges which the LEV is facing right now as it grows.

3. EnergyBus provides a base for designing public LEV infrastructure such as swapping machine, rental station etc. without the monopoly of single infrastructure.

Applications

1. EnergyBus technology is very effective for development of LEV products. It is used in the manufacturing of LEV components as well.

2. The EnergyBus concept is also applicable in the production of E-Bikes such as TDS (TourDeSuisse) E-Bikes, which is built on the Electragil system.

3. It is also used in the public charge stations for Pedelecs which have been deployed in the Tegernsee Alpine region of Germany.

4. The EnergyBus technology is also used in stationary systems. It includes the development of repeater stations in mobile communication network, off grid housing, measurement stations, off grid water pump stations and village DC grids etc.

5. The Fraunhofer ISE also uses EnergyBus in their electric island systems located in Egypt.  The system uses batteries and PVs, including the Kaco converters.

6. The EnergyBus is used in the development of bike port system, motor home and boating equipment.

More Information

EnergyBus organization is a non-profit organization in Germany, consisting mainly of the company members. It works with its partner organizations such as Opi2020, CiA and EnergyBus GmbH etc.
